The Highways Laboratory has been used for over 60 years, has a national reputation and is one of the few that remain under the control of a local authority.

Previously Trialled Highway Treatments and Materials
This section provides an overview of treatments, materials and products that have already been trialled or used on Staffordshire’s highway network.
These examples demonstrate the range of approaches explored by our highways teams and laboratory to support maintenance, innovation and network improvement.
Pothole treatment types
In Staffordshire we utilise a variety of different treatment types including;
- JCB Pothole Pro
- Volumetric patching
- Thermal patch repair
- Cold lay temporary patch repair
- Permanent cold lay repair
- Cut and break patching
- Screeding treatments
Bituminous Materials
In Staffordshire we have our own Highways Laboratory which is involved in developing and trialling new asphalt and bituminous treatment options. Materials already in use, or trialled previously include:
- Low Temperature Asphalt
- Polymer Modified Binders
- Graphene enhanced products
- Low carbon binder additives
- Recycled rubber pellets
- Strengthening grout
- Diesel resistant asphalt surfaces
Road Marking Paint
In Staffordshire we have our own Highways Laboratory which is involved in developing and trialling new road marking paint options. Materials already in use, or trialled previously include:
- Durable cold lay alternatives
- MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) road paint
- Spray applied road paint
- UV cured road paint
Disallowed Treatments
Staffordshire does not generally permit the use of the following products on its highways.
- High Friction Surfacing
- Coloured Surface Treatment (typically red or green paints)
- Permeable Asphalt
- Drainage Kerbs
